The Project
Carnival: Wild Dance of Devils and Marriage.
In the heart of Oaxaca, Mexico, the Carnival of San Martín Tilcajete is one of the most extraordinary festivals in the world, where ancient tradition meets sharp social commentary. Through my lens, I captured the raw, untamed spirit of this celebration in the towns of San Martín Tilcajete and Zaachila, where the boundaries between the sacred and the profane blur in a mesmerizing spectacle. Festivalgoers transform into otherworldly beings, their bodies coated in a primordial mixture of motor oil and acrylic paint. They parade through dusty streets wearing elaborate costumes adorned with devil masks, animal skulls, and jingling bells that create an eerie percussion to their wild dances. What makes this Carnival particularly fascinating is its sharp satirical edge, especially in its commentary on marriage and social relationships, turning the institution of marriage into both a celebration and a gentle mockery.
